John Sells Hanshi
Executive Shihan

A native Californian, from a long line of Californians, John Sells Hanshi began his study of karate and other Asian martial arts as a youth in Los Angeles. By the time he was fourteen, Sells Shihan was practicing karate daily. He took is first lessons in small, neighborhood Judo and Karate clubs.

In 1968, Sells Shihan received his first black belt ranking in a progressive form of Shobayashi-ryu Shorin-ryu under George Torbett. He was then retained by his University to teach the karate courses as part of the physical education curriculum of the school. Sells Shihan went on to train in Shito-ryu concurrently with Shorin-ryu while continuing his studies in Shotokan during summer vacations. After college, he pursued a career in the Aerospace Industry and opened his own commercial karate school while also maintaining his University teaching post.

By 1973, Sells Shihan held a 3rd degree black belt in Shorin-ryu and 2nd degree in Shito-ryu. He became a licensed instructor of Kotaka-ha Shito-ryu with Del S. Saito under the system's founder, Chuzo Kotaka. By 1977, Sells Shihan was teaching in Santa Barbara, California and from 1979 to 1984 he was the karate instructor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. During this same time, John studied Itosukai Shito-ryu and Shotokan from Fumio Demura and Daniel Ivan eventually becoming a senior instructor with the Japan Karatedo Federation USA.

In 1999 Kenzo Mabuni Soke elevated John to eighth dan and May, 2001 in Osaka, Japan at a special celebration, Sells Shihan was honored and awarded the title of Hanshi, for his diligent efforts in promoting the true spirit of karate-do and his technical excellence.

He is also ranked 6th degree black belt in Okinawan Kobudo and is founder of both the United States Kobudo Association and co-founder of the Shindokai Karatedo (with Ben Otake).

Since 1976, Sells Shihan has published many articles in several martial arts magazines including "Black Belt", "Karate Illustrated" and "Dojo Magazine". These articles have all focused on historical aspects of karatedo with the aim of bringing to light the details of karate's past so long hidden and overlooked. As an instructor of karate and kobudo, Sells Shihan teaches and lectures throughout the United States.

Gary McGuinness Hanshi
Technical Director

Hanshi Gary McGuinness began his Martial Arts training in 1974 at the Harry Hamzy School of Self Defense. In August of 1976, Hanshi McGuinness moved to Tempe, Arizona to attend graduate school at Arizona State University (ASU) and began his training in Hayashi-Ha Shito Ryu Karate and Kenshin Ryu Kobudo under Mr. Rudy Crosswell (and Hayashi Teruo Sensei). In December 1978, Hanshi McGuinness earned his Shodan in Hayashi Ha Shito Ryu and shortly thereafter earned Shodan in Kenshin Ryu Kobudo.

In February of 1980, Hanshi McGuinness returned to New England (Billerica, MA) and began teaching Karate and Kobudo at the local Boys and Girls club. He continued his training diligently and was promoted to Nidan in 1982 and then Sandan in 1987 directly by Hayashi Teruo Sensei.

In April 1988, Hanshi McGuinness began his training in Okinawan Goju Ryu under Chinen Teruo Sensei augmenting his core training in Hayashi Ha Shito Ryu. He continued training directly under Chinen Sensei until 2000. Later in 1988 Hanshi McGuinness began training Karate and Kobudo under Hanshi John Sells and has continued as his student to present day

In April of 1992, Hanshi McGuinness was promoted to Yondan in Hayashi Ha Shito Ryu and Sandan in Kenshin Ryu Kobudo.

In April 1994, Hanshi McGuinness was introduced to Mabuni Kenzo Soke at seminars in Albany, NY and Phoenix. AZ sponsored by Mr. Rudy Crosswell. As a result of these seminars, Hanshi McGuinness decided to seek direct affiliation with Kenzo Soke and was accepted as a direct student shortly thereafter (note Hanshi Sells, Moon, Gordon, Cantin, Arrighi and Bartholomay were also accepted as direct students at this time). Kenzo Soke started traveling to the USA on a regular basis to teach his newly accepted students and soon after created the Shito Ryu USA Karate Do Kai. In May 1995 during a month-long visit to the East Coast USA, Hanshi McGuinness was promoted to Godan.

In July 1996, at the request of Kenzo Soke, Hanshi McGuinness (and others) traveled to Osaka, Japan and stayed at the Shito Ryu Hombu Dojo where he received daily training with Kenzo Soke. At the conclusion of the two-week visit, Hanshi McGuinness was promoted to Rokudan with Shihan title and named as Technical Director of Shito Ryu USA Karate Do Kai.

As part of this visit, the Seito Shito Ryu International Tai Kai was instituted as a biannual event to bring together all practitioners of Seito Shito Ryu continuing to this day. The East Coast Shihan hosted the 1st Tai Kai at Mount Holyoke College in 1997as well as the 6th Tai Kai at Lake Placid in 2007. At the 2nd Tai Kai in Spokane, WA, Hanshi McGuinness was promoted to Nandan and then at the 5th Tai Kai in Osaka, Japan Hanshi McGuinness was promoted to Hachidan with Hanshi title. Hanshi McGuinness teaches regularly at the Tai Kai events as well as most other Gasshuku he attends.

Dudley Moon Hanshi

Dudley Moon Hanshi's first exposure to the martial arts (budo) was in 1965 when he spent a year studying Kodokan Judo with a Japanese exchange student. In 1968, he started college, met his future wife Deborah, became best friends with Dean Gordon Hanshi and began training in Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate with Robert Coryer. As his first real teacher, Coryer Sensei had a very significant impact on Moon Shihan's study of budo. In 1972, Coryer Sensei awarded him Shodan in Motobu-Ha Shito-Ryu. Also, through Coryer Sensei, he met and trained extensively with Kuniba, Shogo (headmaster of Motobu-Ha). Subsequently, when Coryer Sensei transferred to Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu, Moon, Gordon and other senior students accompanied him. This led to many classes and training sessions with Hayashi, Teruo (headmaster of Hayashi-Ha) when he visited Coryer Sensei’s dojo. Having three such excellent and skilled teachers, Coryer Sensei, Kuniba Sensei and Hayashi Sensei was truly a gift. Very importantly, they each had very different body builds and their individual Karate form reflected these differences. Unfortunately, organizational politics ultimately led Coryer Sensei to resign from Hayashi Sensei’s group. Then in the late 1980's, Coryer Sensei retired from active Karate teaching. However, his senior students continued to practice and explore what they had learned with Coryer Sensei.

During this time, Moon Shihan was also busy starting a family and training for a career in biomedical science. He received a Master’s degree in Biochemistry (1979), a Ph.D. in  Physiology and Cell Biology (1983), and did post-doctoral work at the Cleveland Clinic Research Institute. After serving in several research faculty positions, he joined the faculty at the Albany College of Pharmacy (ACP) in 1991. During his time at ACP, he was promoted to Full Professor with tenure and was selected by the students as “Teacher of the Year” five times. He retired from ACP in 2018.

In 1994, Moon Shihan was asked to host Mabuni, Kenzo (the second headmaster of Seito Shito-Ryu Karate-Do) for a special one-week training seminar at his ACP dojo. That experience became a turning point in his study of Karate. Mabuni Sensei (as he preferred to be called) made a deep impression on everyone with his practical manner of teaching, careful explanations, and calm demeanor. The Karate he taught was simple on the surface, but profoundly subtle in execution. One had to “feel” his technique to truly experience what he was teaching. Moon decided to change his Karate to Seito Shito-Ryu. Later that year, he was accepted as a direct student of Mabuni, Kenzo at the rank of Godan (5th degree) with a Shihan menjo (teaching license). He remained a student of Mabuni, Kenzo Sensei until Sensei’s passing in 2005. Shortly before his death, Mabuni Sensei promoted Dudley Moon to Hachidan (8th degree) and Hanshi.

In addition to Karate, Moon has trained in Yamanni Chinen Ryu Okinawan Kobudo under Nishime, Kiyoshi since 1995. He has also trained in Daito Ryu (Kodokai/Kiyama Kai) Aikijujutsu under Roy Goldberg since 2004. He has studied these arts partly to better understand and practice the teachings of Mabuni, Kenwa and Mabuni, Kenzo. It is his goal to maintain and pass on the principles of Seito Shito-Ryu Karate-Do to those who are interested. Moon Shihan maintains a dojo at the Dewey Budokan in Delmar, New York and is available for seminar and workshops.

Dean Gordon Hanshi

Dean Gordon Hanshi began training at Hartwick College in 1968 at the suggestion of Dudley Moon, who assured him that "karate does work." His first teacher was Sensei Robert Coryer, who in turn, was a student of Sensei Richard P. Baillargeon. He first trained in Motobu-ha Shito Ryu of the Seishin Kai. Kuniba Shogo was Soke of the Ryu and Hayashi Teruo (later Soke of Hayashi -Ha Shito Ryu) was president of the Kai.

In the summer of 1970, Gordon Hanshi trained in Japan with Sensei Rudy Crosswell who had also been a student of Sensei Coryer. While there, Gordon met and was able to train often with Kuniba Soke. Later Kuniba Soke came to Sensei Coryer's dojo where Gordon Hanshi and Moon Hanshi trained extensively with him, more than once into the very late night.

As happens, organizational difficulties led to a split of the Seishin Kai and in the fallout Sensei Coryer joined Hayashi-Ha Shito Ryu.  Hayashi Soke also visited Sensei Coryer's dojo where Gordon had the opportunity to learn from him.

In the early 70's, at law school in Boston, Gordon was able to train for a time with Tabata Kazumi Shihan in traditional Shotokan. Tabata Shihan was a direct student of Obata Isao, who in turn was a senior student of Funikoshi Gichin, founder of Shotokan and close friend of Mabuni Kenwa Kaiso. It is said they both had been students of Itosu and Higaonna during their time on Okinawa.

Circa 1993 Rudy Crosswell Shihan introduced Gordon Hanshi to Mabuni Kenzo Soke, the second son of Mabuni Kenwa, who founded Seito Shito-Ryu. Mabuni Kenwa preferred to be addressed as "Sensei."

In 1994 after being hosted by Moon Hanshi, Mabuni Sensei sojourned at the home of Gordon Hanshi for some personal training. Shortly thereafter Gordon was accepted as a direct student of Mabuni Kenzo Sensei who awarded him both Godan and Shihan menjos. These came as a surprise.

At the 2005 Taikai Gordon Hanshi was awarded Hachi Dan and Hanshi menjos, authorized and signed by Mabuni Kenzo as Soke, though sadly he passed away a few weeks prior to the event.

Gordon has also trained in Daito Ryu (Kodokai/Kiyama Kai) Aikijujutsu with Moon Shihan, under Roy Goldberg since 2004.

Gordon taught karate at Utica University for 45 years and continues teaching Seito Shito-Ryu privately.

Barbara Arrighi Hanshi

I started karate training in 1972 at Henry Jay’s School of Karate in Holyoke, MA. We trained in the tradition of Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate under Kuniba Shogo Sensei and Sensei Richard Ballargeon National Karate and Jujitsu Union. After the untimely death of Sensei Richard Ballargeon in 1989 and Kuniba Sensei July 14, 1992 our dojo closed and several of us looked for other organizations to join. By this time, I had  achieved my Yondan rank.

In 1981, we joined Soke Takayuki Kubota’s International Karate Association (IKA) called Gosoku-Ryu Karate. As a member of the IKA, I trained with Soke Kubota for many years.  In 1990, I was certified as a Kubotan instructor under the teaching of Soke Kubota, the inventor of the Kubotan. On July 5, 2015, I was promoted to a 5th Dan Kuboton Instructor by Soke Kubota.

In 1994, I was elevated to 5th Dan in Karate and was awarded my Shihan license from Master Kubota. It was with great sadness that we learned of Kubota Soke’s passing in 2024; he was a great man and superb teacher.

By 1995, we were missing our Shito-Ryu roots and were delighted to find and start training in the tradition of Seitoshitoryu Nippon Karate Do Kai with Soke Mabuni Kenzo. It was the beginning of a long and wonderful relationship.

In 1996, Mabuni Kenzo, Soke awarded me Godan rank, Shihan title and license to teach Seitoshitoryu. One of the greatest honors of my life.

In the summer of 1996, I was invited to train at the Hombu Dojo in Osaka, Japan. Together with five other Shihans, we trained with Kenzo Mabuni Soke at the Hombu Dojo in Japan for three weeks. It was a trip of a lifetime to be in the place where so many karate masters trained, taught, and developed Shito-Ryu. It was an emotionally overwhelming experience – we all felt inspired to be training in the same setting as so many of our revered teachers.  It was awe-inspiring to feel ourselves carrying the tradition forward and to learn directly from Soke. I felt the spirit of the great masters in the Hombu dojo at all times. No matter how hard you trained, you could feel their spirits asking you to train even harder, which I did.

In 1999, I was honored to host the first International Seitoshitoryu Taikai, outside of Japan, this was held on the campus of Mount Holyoke College where I worked as the Deputed Chief of Police for many decades.

In 1999 I was awarded Shichidan 7th degree.

I was recognized by Soke Tsukasa Mabuni, in 2015, with my Hachidan (8th) degree and Hanshi [title] both in the Seitoshitoryu tradition.

John Bartholomay Hanshi

In 1975 Bartholomay Shihan began training Shito-Ryu in Santa Barbara, California at the Pacific Karate-Do Institute under David Krieger (1942-2023) a direct student of Tani Chojiro (1921-1998).

From 1995 to Present he has been training Seito Shito-Ryu directly under the Mabuni Family and Japan Karate-Do Kai headquartered in Osaka, Japan.

Kevin Hammond Kyoshi

Hammond Shihan started his journey in the martial arts in the early 70s when he left his home in Chicago and moved to Seattle. Since then he has studied many different styles including Goju Ryu, Korean karate, Kyokushin kai, Hayashi Ha Shito Ryu, Kotaka Ha Shito Ryu, Gosoku Ryu, Tai Chi Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, and Iaido.

Despite all that variety of training, he was looking to get to the core of karate, not just exploring the branches but get to the root of a style.

In 1995 he got his chance when he met soke Mabuni Kenzo in Arizona. He knew he wanted to follow this path and after a couple years, he switched his dojo's practice to Seito Shito Ryu and has been practicing Seito Shito Ryu ever since.

Doug Exum Kyoshi

Doug Exum began studying Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu Karate with Jerry Ferguson and Julius Thiry of Washington Karate Association. After receiving Shodan rank, Exum sensei began teaching the Shito-ryu curriculum and went on to receive Nidan rank before his departure from WKA to assist founding Pacific Karate Organization with Ferguson sensei. Under their guidance, PKO grew to become one of the most recognized schools in the Pacific Northwest with six locations, hundreds of students, and a highly successful competition team. Together they fostered numerous national and international champions.

Exum Shihan and Ferguson began personal training with Soke Kenzo Mabuni and joined the Shito-ryu International Karate-do family in 1996.  This affiliation allowed them to perfect the kihon, kata, and bunkai specific to Seito Shito-ryu.

Soke Mabuni departed this life in June 2005 followed thereafter by Ferguson’s passing in November 2006.  Despite the loss of his long-time friend and instructor, Exum sensei remains a dedicated Shito-ryu practitioner who is recognized as Roku-dan (6th degree) blackbelt. Shihan and Kyoshi titles awarded by Soke Mabuni distinguish him as a well-qualified Shito-ryu instructor.

Exum Shihan has participated in sport karate as competitor, coach, official, and tournament organizer. While serving as chief instructor at Northwest Karate-do, his students won numerous national and international sport karate awards. He was a founding member and president of Washington State Karate-do Federation, regional sport organization of the USA-NKF. He also played a key role in directing numerous events including 1999 Shito-ryu World Championship Taikai, NW Junior Classic, Mabuni Cup, and Washington State Karate-do Federation tournaments from 2007-2013. As an official, he is a recognized National Referee with USA-National Karate Federation and the Pan-American Karate Federation.

Francine Kurth Kyoshi

Francine Kurth Shihan began her karate training in 1987 in Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu with Dudley Moon, Sensei and received her Shodan in 1992. In 1994, they both became direct students of Mabuni Kenzo, Soke, and began training in the curriculum of Seito Shito-Ryu. She received her Nidan menjo from Mabuni Soke in 1995 and in 1998, she was invited with five other women from across the US to personally train with Mabuni Soke in the Hombu dojo, Osaka, for two weeks, during which she was awarded her Sandan menjo. She has competed and trained at numerous Taikai in the US and Japan, and was recognized as Godan and Renshi, and received her Shihan license, in 2017. She was most recently promoted to Rokudan and Kyoshi by Mabuni Tsukasa, Soke in 2023.

Along the way, she has also trained in Aikido, Yang Taiji, Yamanni Ryu Kobudo, and Daito Ryu Aki jujutsu, as well as attending many seminars in different karate styles, studying the commonalities in martial arts. She continues to concentrate on teaching the principles of Seito Shito-Ryu karate, as taught to her by Mabuni Kenzo, Soke.

Mari-Jo Suzuki Renshi

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Suzuki Shihan began her journey in Shito Ryu karate in 1995 as an adult karateka of Hayashi-ha Shito Ryu under Shihan Carl Hultin in Dublin, CA.  She earned her Shodan rank in both Hayashi-ha and Kenshin Ryu kobudo in 2000, followed by her Nidan rank in 2002.

In 2005, under Shihan Richard Boeckholt, she forged a new path with Seito Shito Ryu, while continuing to practice Yamanni Ryu kobudo founded by Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro, and Iaido.  Sadly, Shihan Boeckholt suddenly passed away in 2008. After much angst and seeking out advice, She moved forward and opened her non-profit dojo – Northern California Karate-do – under the guidance of Hanshi John Bartholomay. During that period, she trained many students who competed and medaled at local, regional and national levels, with several athletes who became members of the USA-NKF Junior and Senior teams.

In 2013, her dojo was approved to host the 2015 10th Taikai in San Francisco, CA – an honor she cherishes to this day.

In the Spring of 2023, she retired as a Program Project Manager with Kaiser Permanente IT, and that summer was awarded Rokudan and Kyoshi rank by our 3rd Soke Tsukasa Mabuni at the 13th Taikai in Osaka.

Her goal as a Seito Shito Ryu instructor is to continually challenge and bring out the best in every student, and as a karateka, continue to learn and grow.

John Jessum Renshi

The path of karate opened to Jessum Shihan in 1977 when he found himself under the guidance and instruction of Sensei Dean Gordon, who had a profound and deep impact on his life, a bond which remains unbreakable to this day. Under Sensei Gordon’s guidance, Jessum Shihan received his Shodan rank after five years of Hayashi-ha Shitoh Ryu study, and was encouraged by Sensei Gordon to “polish” his black belt by traveling to Japan for a year, studying directly with the masters.

In 1982 Jessum flew to Osaka, Japan, practicing  directly with Head Master Hayashi Soke, at The Linden Dojo, run by kumite specialist Junichro Hamaguchi, a world Silver medalist, along with Tadashi Hashimoto Sensei, a renown kata expert. Having an internationally acclaimed dojo, Linden and its bevy of talented instructors hosted karate-ka and teachers from around the world resulting in a diverse exchange of ideas and growth. A year passed quickly and understanding there was much to learn, Jessum Shihan stayed an additional three years.

In 1986 as the study of karate grew in popularity, Hayashi Soke was asked to send instructors to Washington State, to help an affiliated group looking for Japanese trained talent. Asked by Hayashi Soke if he would be interested in going, Jessum Shihan took the opportunity, and ran a studio in Seattle full time, training hundreds of students, who competed successfully both nationally and internationally. Known as a “basics” Sensei, Jessum Shihan incorporated his experience from Japan and delivered high repetition and strong no-nonsense impact practices, achieving elevated results for those he trained. Jessum Shihan actively participated in tournaments throughout his career as well, winning Washington All State kumite in 1989 and was a kumite semifinalist in Las Vegas at Osamu Ozawa’s traditional Ippon Karate Tournament, which drew martial art talent from around the world.

The call of Japan remained strong and completing his teaching obligation, Jessum Shihan returned to Osaka in 1989 practicing an additional three years, before returning to Seattle to settle. He maintained a consistent practice and taught with Sensei Jerry Ferguson, an incredibly gifted karate-ka, and Michael O’Donnel, a Linden trained karate-ka, who ran a dojo in Seattle as well.

In 1996 Jessum Shihan received a phone call from Sensei Gordon asking if he would help translate for Soke Mabuni Kenzo, who wanted to bring his father’s karate to America and establish a foundation for its continued growth. Practicing with this original core group in New York, Soke Mabuni asked Jessum Shihan if he would be interested in becoming part of their association, which he gladly did, arranging quickly to have Mabuni Soke come to Washington State, and hosting the first Mabuni Cup in October of 1998, ultimately leading to the establishment of affiliated dojo’s and practitioners throughout Washington State. Jessum Shihan was awarded a 6th degree Shihan ranking by Mabuni Soke in 1998, along with a nidan rank in Hayashi-ha Shitoh Ryu.

Jessum Shihan continued actively teaching until Covid shut down the two studios he was with and currently accepts only private students for instruction. When asked the one aspect of his time with Soke Mabuni that affected him most, he answered, “If there was just one thing Soke left with me from the time we spent together, it was his kindness, compassion and easy laugh. He changed the way I taught and understood karate in profound ways, and for that I am eternally grateful.”

Erik Svenson Renshi

Erik Svenson Shihan began his karate training in Hayashi-Ha Shito Ryu in 1982 at the age of 19 under Richard Ingstrum Shihan while at college at Oberlin College in Ohio. After graduating 3 years later, he moved to Massachusetts where he began training with Gary McGuinness Hanshi (continuing in Hahashi-Ha Shito Ryu). After 2 more years training with Sensei McGuinness, Svenson Shihan earned his Shodan rank. Shortly after, he took some time off to begin raising his young family, later moving to the Seattle, Washington area.

After moving back to the Massachusetts some years later, he began training again in 2004. He earned his Shodan rank in Seito Shito Ryu a year later at the 2005 Tai Kai. Since then, he has been training consistently, earning his Nidan in 2007 at the Lake Placid Tai Kai and Sandan in 2015 at the San Francisco Tai Kai. In the Fall of 2022, after continued, diligent training, he earned his Godan rank.

Svenson Shihan has recently begun teaching in his home dojo and is looking forward to bringing the art of Seito Shito Ryu to a new generation of students.
